Real Web ROI: Online Marketing and Remarketing
We’ve all questioned it – how do those sites we’ve been searching somehow show up in ads along the sides of other pages once we’ve left that initial page? How, once we’ve finished looking at popular vacation spots, are we finding those vacation spots once more popping up along the sides of other pages we visit? Called remarketing, this is one of the newest trends in online marketing – and for good reason.
According to Google, remarketing “lets you show ads to people who have visited your website or used your mobile app before. When people leave your website without buying anything, for example, remarketing helps you reconnect with them by showing relevant ads as they browse the web, as they use mobile apps, or as they search on Google.”

How does this work? Remarketing works by placing a cookie on a visitor’s computer, thereby allowing your ads to pop up once they’ve left your page. As with pay-per-click advertising, you only pay when someone clicks on your ad.
Why does this work? Think about it: instead of posting an ad all over the internet, ensuring it is seen by a small minority of your target market, this form of online marketing guarantees that it is being seen by those who are genuinely interested – otherwise why were they on your site to begin with. Not only does this keep it fresh in their minds, it also means that you are not wasting your marketing dollars by going after uninterested consumers. The buying process can be a long one, and so continually reminding a potential lead about your business helps to cement your image in their mind. The constant exposure also works to increase brand awareness.
Like any form of online marketing, the effectiveness of any remarketing campaign is contingent on a number of different factors, including the structure of your ad and the content – so, like pay-per-click campaigns, if you are as yet unsure about how to approach this, it might be smart to talk to someone who knows all about it.
